Propolis, a resinous substance produced by bees, is a well-known anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antifungal agent that is widely researched for its potential benefits in gingivitis and periodontitis.

Propolis has demonstrated anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties, making it a promising candidate for treating gingivitis and periodontitis. Studies are ongoing to explore its effectiveness in these areas. Propolis toothpaste has been shown to effectively reduce gingival inflammation in patients with oral clefts and dental appliances. Additionally, when comparing the effectiveness of propolis chewing gum and propolis mouthwash, the mouthwash has been found to produce a greater reduction in plaque and gingival index scores.

The purpose of randomized controlled clinical trial, conducted by Shilpa Gunjal et al, was to compare the effectiveness of a propolis-containing mouthwash with a chlorhexidine-containing mouthwash in reducing plaque and reducing the severity of gingivitis. This study involved 45 Malaysian residents with chronic generalized gingivitis. Participants were randomized to one of three groups: group A (mouthwash with 5% propolis), group B (mouthwash with 0.12% chlorhexidine), and group C (placebo mouthwash). All patients were instructed to brush their teeth with Colgate toothpaste after the morning meal and after dinner (twice daily). Gingival health and plaque levels were assessed using the plaque index and gingival index at baseline and after 21 days.

The study was divided into three phases, each lasting 21 days with a 15-day washout period between phases. There were no significant differences between the groups in scores at baseline. However, significant improvements were noted by day 21. Participants in the propolis rinse group had a more pronounced decline in plaque index and gingival index scores compared to the other two groups.
